Course Objectives

  • Develop foundational map reading, interpretation and map-making skills.
  • Train students in practical cartographic representation for undergraduate geography.

Unit Structure

  1. Scale, direction, symbols and map projection basics.
  2. Relief representation: contours, hachures and spot heights.
  3. Toposheet interpretation and terrain analysis.
  4. Thematic map design and visual hierarchy.
  5. Practical map compilation and field sketching.

Practical Components

  • Draw cross-sections from contour maps.
  • Prepare two thematic maps from sample data.
  • Submit practical notebook with cartographic conventions.
